Soffit and fascia work behind the scenes, moving air through the attic and shielding the roof's edge from the elements. When it's installed carelessly, that hidden system turns into an expensive headache.
Homeowners in New Philadelphia, OH tend to notice their siding long before they think about soffit and fascia, yet these two components carry a lot of responsibility. Soffit panels are what let air circulate through the attic, pulling heat and moisture out through the ridge or gable vents above. Get that airflow wrong, and you're looking at hotter shingles in the summer and a higher chance of trapped moisture causing mold or ice damming once temperatures drop.
Fascia is the trim board running along the roof's edge, and it does two jobs at once — anchoring your gutters and covering the exposed ends of the rafters. Before any new fascia goes up, our team inspects the rafter tails and the board underneath for soft spots or rot. Skipping that step and simply covering old, damaged wood with new trim just delays a repair that will cost more down the road.
A well-vented soffit system is sized to the attic it's serving, not just picked to match the trim color on the rest of the house. Underventilating the eaves defeats the whole purpose, and even correctly sized soffit panels can be choked off if insulation baffles inside the attic aren't positioned to keep airflow moving. Our crew treats soffit and fascia as a working system first, because the long-term health of your roof depends on it functioning properly, not just looking finished.
A properly vented soffit keeps air moving through your attic, which helps control both temperature and humidity — protecting the shingles above and the framing below from premature wear.
Watch for gutters pulling away from the roofline, soft or discolored wood, and paint that's flaking near the roof edge. Our team will take a close look during your on-site estimate to confirm what's going on.
Usually not — soffit and fascia can typically be replaced on their own. If the crew spots a related roofing or siding concern along the way, they'll let you know before moving forward.
